Commercial Display Case Buying Guide
Commercial Display Cases
What is a commercial display case?
Commercial display cases come in all shapes and sizes. They can be used to display merchandise, awards, important documents, or anything else that needs to be kept both safe and within view. The difference between a commercial and a residential display case is mainly in the items being displayed. Commercial display cases are built to showcase products and items that may have value or importance to the public, where as more residential display cases are built to showcase items of value in one’s home, such as collectibles or fine dinnerware. Commercial display cases are also more rigidly constructed to stand up to the extended wear and tear that may not be present in residential settings.
Things to consider when choosing a commercial display case:>
Locks
Display cases are available either with or without locks. Locking display cases generally have two different kinds of locks: built in locks and tumbler locks. A built in lock would be installed directly into the frame or door of a display case to keep its contents securely locked inside. Tumbler locks are used in display cases with sliding doors. This type of lock holds the sliding doors in the closed position.
Lighting
Lighted display cases are usually preferable for commercial use because they draw more attention to their contents, such as merchandise being sold, than do display cases without lighting. Most display cases have the option of adding interior lighting, and often display cases without lighting can be retrofitted to have lighting and other accessories.
Shelving
There are two basic kinds of display case shelving: fixed shelving and adjustable shelving. Display cases with fixed shelving either have just one position in which shelves can be mounted or do not have any shelves at all (like museum display cases for example). More commonly, display cases have adjustable shelves that can be mounted at various levels. These models typically come with a few shelves that are installed in different positions through the use of brackets.
Mounting location
While commercial display cases can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes, there are five basic mounting options to choose from. Free standing display cases and table display cases do not need to be secured to a wall, while wall mounted and recessed display cases involve being attached to a wall. Counter top display cases are more versatile in that they can often be either mounted to a wall or used as a free standing display case.
